It seems like a lifetime since I posted on the blogsite. So much has happened in that time. Besides catching the horrible flu that seems to be going around, I have also managed to get the photo shoot done of the up coming Summer Range for the new website which I am hoping to launch very shortly. I am excited to add a sneak peek of what is to come. I was stoked at the way the photos came out. Thanks to Mel from Meloo Photography for a great job. Especial thanks to those wonderful models who came and strutted their stuff on the day! I am also excited to say that we had our first premmie babies come and model for us. I am offering a custom made service for premmie nappies on request.

Thailand Trip

I can't believe that it has been so long since I last posted a blog. So much has happened.... My family and I took a trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand for three weeks to see my dad and do a spot of well deserved shopping. What can I say it was such an exciting trip. The Thai people are beautiful people, always happy and always so helpful. I couldn't believe how much they loved Amelia.... everyone, women, men and children were mesmorised by her and just felt the urge to always touch her! Dad assures me that it is because not many foreign people (frangs - as the Thai's say) bring their babies with them when they visit Thailand.

So what did we do while we were there, I hear you say???? Like most people who visit Thailand we shopped till we dropped! The good old shopping centres, the night markets and more night markets. I couldn't believe how great the bargins were and how well Amelia coped with us walking around in 38 degree heat till 11pm most nights. Of course we had to buy a bigger suitcase to bring all the things home!

Besides shopping we managed to get to see some of the interesting sights around Dad's house. One of the days we took a trip up to the Tiger Kingdom where we actually got to go in and pat the baby cubs and lay on the medium size tigers. This was an experience that I won't forget in a hurry. The same day also saw
us visit the Hill Tribe Villages. We managed to meet some of the Karen Tribe - the ladies who where the gold rings around their necks. I got to try on half a set of rings.... how heavy were they!!!! After lunch, we went to the Masea Elephant Park - saw the elephant show, patted them and were patted by them and then had an elephant ride... Michael will tell you all that I was scared stiff of falling off, and he would be right.

It's Been Way Too Long!

It seems like forever since the last time that I posted on the blog. So what have I been up to??? I finally bit the bullet and bought a website. I have spent countless hours working on the website which we are going to be launching late next month. Along with the new website, I enjoyed my recent shopping trip to purchase the new fabrics for the summer ranges. I have decided after much deliberation that I will be making collections of nappy covers rather than a bit of this and a bit of that! I can't wait to see how they all look. I made the first one of the summer range up tonight and can't wait for Amelia to wake up in the morning to try it on her and see how it looks!

Along with finding new materials; Michael, Amelia and I are preparing for our big trip to Thailand. It is only 2wks away and there is so much to do! Besides spending some well deserved time resting and visiting my dad, I also have another more pressing and exciting task at hand once I am there. Searching for new and different fabric! I need to fill an order and a special request for natural fibers (Sara - I am on the job!).

Orders have also taken up much of my time lately. Along with sewing as much as I can, we have all had that dreaded bug.... snotty noses and sore throats were what you were greeted at the door with this week! It started with Amelia then she so lovingly passed it on to me and well we couldn't be a true family if we then didn't pass it on to Michael. As my sister told me and I was to find out the hard way - "Mum's don't get sick days!" Oh how true she was! So when Michael had a sick day from work, he also found out that daddy's don't get sick days either! My little girl turns 1 in a months time so before I go I also have to organise her birthday as it is the week we come home! Just thought I would post a photo of my gorgeous girl who is growing up way too fast.

Things that go BOING in the night!

Over the past couple of nights while I have been sewing quietly (well as quietly as my sewing machine goes) while everyone was asleep, out of the blue I could hear this boing....boing....boing.... giggle.....giggle... I had no idea what it was. After thinking that it was a figament of my imagination, I heard it again. Now people who have had little ones will know that the best revenge from family and friends that had them before you is to give you noisy toys. The noisier the better my sister would say. My sister Cath, did tell me once before that some have a mind of their own and often she has woken to the lady from the Fisher Price toys singing away in the middle of the night. My "mind of its own" toy is this butterfly that when you move the wings it goes "boing.... boing.... boing.... giggle.... giggle". Where was it? This was the next challenge. It wasn't in the toy box, it wasn't on the lounge room floor, it was on the floor in the entry. Like a lot of toys of Amelia's there it still lays. So here to the boing in the middle of the night! The butterfly who has been keeping me company whilst I have filled the many orders!

Mathilda's Markets

We at Mielie Moo Designs had an absolute blast at the recent Mathilda's Markets in Brisbane. As it was our first markets, Michael and I didn't know what to expect. We weren't sure how our nappy and nappy covers would be received by the public. Much to our surprised we were overwhelmed by the interest and support. Thanks to the wonderful people who purchased our products, it was fantastic to see others getting as enthused about cloth nappies as much as we do! A massive thanks to Melissa Mielekamp from Meloo Photography for our photography and to my great mate Felicia for putting together the best ever slideshow of Mel's photos. That was a huge hit - allowing us to explain to customers how chubby our little Amelia was and how our nappies fitted!

Even though we left the day absolutely exhausted, I couldn't wait to get back and order more fabric. Whilst Michael went off to watch the Queensland Reds win the best game of the season, I couldn't help myself but to surf the web looking for new ideas and designs. There are a couple of orders to fill and will be done by the end of the week and then on to new stock!

Not only did we get to meet wonderful customers, we also got to meet some fantastic stall holders. Other first timers to the Mathilda's Markets were Ann and Tony from 1 Puddle Lane. Ann makes the most fabulous childrens clothing. It was surprising that some of our fabrics matched so if you are looking for a little dress to match your Mielie Moo Designs nappy cover then look no further than 1 Puddle Lane.

Jo from Lovestamp had the most gorgeous jewellery. Oh and I was so excited to be placed next to Abbey J who makes the most stunning hair accessories for little ones. Michael had to set me a $$$ limit to ensure I didn't buy the whole shop! Tennille told me that the two colours of Itty Bitty Snappies I had chosen and put aside were so popular people were offering her more money for them!!

The answer to will we be back? - "YES" you bet! Unfortunately we will not be at the next market due to us holidaying in Thailand, but definately look out for us at the following one. In the meantime, I am trying to get a website up and running where you can purchase directly online. If you are after anything while this is being done, just email me and I will endeavour to get your order filled.

Sewing and More Sewing

These past couple of weeks has been sewing and more sewing in prepartion for the Mathilda's Markets. No sooner do I get stock done, they have sold and on their way to their new owners. This means that each time I duck in to get some thread or a small amount of fabric I come out with more exciting new fabric designs to replace the sold ones!!

In between sewing I have had the fabulous Melissa Mielekamp from Point Shoot and Play Photography, photograph my nappies. On Good Friday a great friend of mine Felicia, her little bundle of joy Riley, Amelia, Mel and I spent the afternoon down on the waterfront at Shorncliffe taking some stunning photos. Keep your eye out for what Mel has put together. I certainly can't wait.

Along with having fun running around in Mielie Moo Designs nappies down at the water, Riley and Amelia also enjoyed going through the scraps yesterday down in my work room. I couldn't resist but to share some cute photos of the two having a heap of fun.

I received exciting news this afternoon, we will be a stall holder at the next Brisbane Mathilda's Market on the 17 April. This means you will be able to visit and purchase stock first hand. What a Rainy Day Brings

Considering it was a wet day and nothing much to do, we started taking random photos of Amelia only to realise that of course she was wearing Mielie Moo Design Nappies. So who better to model my designs but my daughter...Here are a few snap shots that I took and couldn't resist sharing. As you can see Amelia is wearing the Pink, Green and Red Spot with Ruffles currently available in small, medium and large.

We have worked out that by Amelia wearing Mielie Moo Designs Nappies all the time, we are well and truely on our way to saving more spending money for when we go to Thailand in June rather than on disposables.

My baby is growing up so fast.... here she is trying really hard to crawl. Amelia has on the Bugs and Flowers Nappy which also is available in small, medium and large - with or without pink ruffles.

Welcome to 2010

Finally I have got back into the swing of it after an extremely busy December and January. Besides a very busy and fantastic 1st Christmas with Amelia, and a very quiet New Year I had been madly preparing for Amelia's Baptism. This meant many hours spent making a beautiful gown rather than nappy and nappy covers. I have to say I was extremely proud of my efforts and the day was just superb. I think everyone had a lovely day.... the priest made it extra special with his quirky antics. I couldn't go past showing you all a quick picture of our special day.

Monkey Magic

Who would have thought that I would have had a request to make a nappy cover for a monkey. A great friend of mine Felicia made this beautiful monkey for her son Riley's 1st Birthday and wanted a nappy. How could I resist making such a beautiful monkey a nappy. The trick was modifying the small pattern to make it even smaller. Of course it needed to have a label and all - no monkey is complete without it's very own couture nappy!!!! Felicia has promised to make Amelia a little girl one for her first birthday - she will have to have a frilly nappy cover indeed!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

I can't believe that there is only 36 days or so before it's Christmas. Where has the year gone. I told myself that this Christmas I would be organised - that I wouldn't let it get on top of me again. What have I done - exactly that, it's on top of me already! Usually by now I have all the Christmas shopping done and am putting up the Christmas Tree (yes I know I am a week early) and looking at all the wonderful new decorations out at the shops. So far I have managed to only buy some small stocking fillers and no presents - can't even think what to buy.

This years checklist is bigger than ever:

Finish orders before Christmas - (almost done - still going on that awaiting more fabric)
Make sure Amelia has a beautiful Christmas nappy to go with her beautiful dress - (not sure I have done that yet!)
Get photo in beautiful nappy and dress with Santa (still searching for a good looking Santa!)
Plan how the Christmas lights will look with Michael so he lights up the street and doesn't burn down the house! (need to pin Michael down and actually look at what lights we have and what lights he has been hiding!)
Finish Christmas shopping - Santa has to come to one little girl and one big boy! (I hate to say it but I might have to become one of those Midnight Shoppers)
Plan Christmas day lunch - Christmas at our house this year - very excited. (I know it will be baked ham and roast pork/beef - just need to think of the desert)
Finish the Christmas cards and send them out this year!!! (Maybe I can rehash the ones I did last year and forgot to send!!)
Attend all the other Christmas parties - Mothers Group, School break up and graduations etc. (just need to remember the dates and the ones I have replied "yes" to)
Organise a Christening and make a beautiful Christening gown for Amelia before the 25 December if possible. (Seeing the Priest on Thursday and need to find someone who pulls up smocking.)

I am exhausted just thinking about it - come on Leonie snap out of it and just enjoy it!!!! You love Christmas - don't become the Scrooge!

Boys, Boys, Boys!!!

I am very excited with my new purchases. I have been asked so many times, do you do nappy or nappy covers for boys. I can now say "You bet!!!" I bought some light weight denim which I have in mind for making little boys ones with pockets on the back and bronze clips to give the the jean look. Oh and not to forget the good old frills in the denim also for the girls.

I also found a gorgeous print of crabs and sea creatures in a red, pale blue, fawn and brown colour way. I couldn't wait to see what it looked like made up so I have already cut it out and folded it up just to see what it looked like. I am hoping that those with boys love it as much as I do.

How very exciting today has shaped up to be. This morning I got an email from the people making my labels asking me to proof them for production. Then to top it all off my business cards arrived on my doorstep. This is making it all so real now and more professional. So now when someone asks about what I do, I can hand them a business card rather than writing it all down for them. My zipper pocket in my handbag now houses a handful of cards just in case!

I also had a parcel arrive full of materials for the absorbency part of the nappies. I really think it is time to use all the scrap and make Amelia a whole lot of new nappies. Her poor little bottom is becoming red raw from using the disposables. Maybe they will be the first nappies to come out of my new room that we are fixing up downstairs. Michael has been kind enough to agree on getting our floors done downstairs so that Amelia can have a play area and mummy can have a sewing studio. This means that our dining room table can become that once again and that I can leave everything out if I wish.

I had to share this priceless picture with you. My beautiful daughter Amelia trying her hand at writing for the first time. It looks like she is focusing intently on the game that we were all playing. I just love watching her develop...it seems like the time is just whizzing on by!

Maxene's Baby Shower Gift Pack

Michael's sister Rebecca commissioned me to make a baby shower gift for Maxene. Luckily I knew that she was having a girl. I couldn't resist using some one off fabrics that I had put away for Amelia to create these designs. I also couldn't resist giving her one of my slings, which her sister-in-law Cleo kindly modelled for me. Unfortunately Amelia decided to christen it for Maxene with a slight spew... note to self don't put Amelia in someone else's sling after she has had a feed! Thank God Maxene is family and didn't mind one bit. Soon she will join all of us new mothers with the new perfume/odour... "Baby Spew Fragrance" not sure if that would take off on the baby market circuit!

I have finally finished sewing up this seasons nappies and covers. Riley kindly modelled one of the range of covers. He was so enthralled by the camera that at one point he even knew that we were trying to take a photo of the nappy cover and pointed to his backside. Too quick for us to catch on camera though.

I was so excited to hear that my Dad was coming over from Thailand to stay for two weeks with me. Now that he is here I don't want the two weeks to end. It is the first time he has met Amelia and the two are like old friends. Chatting all the time, so much so that Michael is slightly jealous that Dad is getting more responses than he!

Whilst Dad is here I have asked him to take some photos of my new range. So stay posted hopefully by the end of the week I will have some new photos - oh and thanks to those lovely friends who have said that I can borrow their children as models.

A New Label

Thanks to our lovely neighbours Donna and Brad, a scrumptious gourmet BBQ lunch got my creative juices flowing. While the men talked about only what men talk about, Felicia, Donna and I sat under the shade of the tree with the kids and racked our brains over what my new label should look like. Well here it is....I am so excited with the way it looks - thanks girls for your help! Now to get the labels printed so I can sew them on the nappies and I will be ready to rock and roll.

My dad has just arrived from Thailand and is staying at my house. I am really enjoying him being with us and love watching his interactions with Amelia. This has put my sewing and cutting on the back burner a little as well, so my appologies for the delay.

New Fabrics

Thanks to Marion Marshall at The Quilters Angel in Highfields Toowoomba, I have found some beautiful fabrics. Not only have I found some wonderful fabrics, but she has also provided me the name of her supplier so I too can pass on these beautiful fabrics in my nappies. Can't wait to get cutting an sewing!!!

Anyone wanting a lovely trip to Toowoomba, don't forget to stop off at The Village Green on the New England Highway, Highfields. Karen, the boys, the 2 baby girls and I enjoyed a wonderful morning firstly browsing the scrapbook shop, then onto the quilting shop and to top it off the endless choice of delicious chocolates at the Chocolate Cafe. Michael is really disappointed that I didn't bring him home any chocolates.

Well it is official. Mielie Moo Designs is now a business specialising in baby nappies and accessories. I am currently searching for wonderful fabrics to be able to make my nappies out of ensuring that they are certainly "a one of a kind" type of nappy.

I am hoping to have some beautiful nappy fabrics that will make the nappy become more of a fashion statement rather than just a necessity! The ruffles on the back of the nappy means that you can do away with the traditional pilcher. I am also doing a range of pilchers that can be worn over non-waterproof nappies and also disposables. As there are snaps across the front securing the nappy, it means that as your baby grows so too does your nappy or pilcher.

WOW what a couple of days it has been... my first order and just in time for Christmas. I sent a couple of photos to Jane a friend of mine, showing her the nappies that I made Amelia and she has already put an order in for Christmas ones.

So off to the sewing machine I go!!!!

Getting Started

Well I finally have made the leap and started my own blog. I thought that it was about time that I started sharing some of my designs with others. After the birth of my baby daughter Amelia, I found that the expense of nappies was outrageous and that there were so many different types of modern cloth nappies around. Finding the right ones for me was time consuming and I found that the ones I wanted were just not out there. I needed them to be practical, but I also wanted funky or hip all at the same time.

The question was whether to go organic or not... if I went organic then they were not waterproof. If they were not waterproof then they required a pilcher/cover... and so it went on. After many years of patchworking and sewing, I knew what beautiful fabrics were out there and decided that I needed to do something with them. Hence my nappies were born and so too this blog.
